![]() ![]() The story concerns Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl who takes speech lessons from Professor Henry Higgins so that she can pass as a lady. “My Fair Lady” is a musical based upon George Bernard Shaw’s “Pygmalion,” with book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe. All performances are in the Lee College Performing Arts Center. 6 and 7 the final performance with be at 2:30 p.m. The rest of the performances for this BLT program will be presented at 8 p.m. But it’s never ceased to amaze me how much talent we have in this area. ![]() We have a lot of very well-trained people alongside very enthusiastic newcomers. ![]() “The level of talent we have at the Baytown Little Theater is incredible,” Wadzinski said. Wadzinski says it’s a very unusual circumstance for a community theater to be able to showcase such talent - and in such an environment as the LC Performing Arts Center. “We do a lot of shows with parts for kids. “With the Baytown Little Theater, these kids have a place to be,” Wadzinski said. The director says that while society and the educational system may be ignoring these kids, BLT refuses to do so. “What about the kids who can’t play football or softball or basketball? Where do they go?“ They learn the same lessons in the arts,” Wadzinski said. “No one will ever convince me that you don’t learn the same things in terms of teamwork, responsibility, social aspects and all of the things that are supposedly the sole baileywick of sports. Wadzinski said, without necessarily knocking sports, that without only one member of this team, the whole house of cards comes tumbling down. Meanwhile, there are 150 members of this musical’s cast and crew. There are five people who play at a time in a basketball game, and the number is 11 for football. When kids walk through that door, they’re on equal footing with those people.” “We have doctors, lawyers, policemen, housewives, teachers and professionals of all types. “Theater is a very unique situation in that, once you walk through those doors, nobody cares what you do outside those doors,” Wadzinski said. “It’s a grave, grave error to diminsh the importance of arts in a community, in a country and in a culture,” Wadzinski said. One of the objective of BLT is to help combat that very issue. Wadzinski says it is no secret that funding for the arts has been going by the wayside in public schools for so many years. They are held responsible for their actions at all times.” “They’re able to form friendships with adults and in their own peer group. The impact that this exercise has on them is so important,” Wadzinksi said. “The kids are why I remain involved (in BLT). Tickets were only $5, the performances took place in the company’s original venue and some of the cast of crew of this latest run weren’t even born yet. “This is as good as any show you will see anywhere.”Ī lot has changed in this world since Wadzinski first directed his all-time favorite play in 1988 with the BLT thespians. “This is a very difficult piece of theater, and I just couldn’t be prouder of this cast and crew,” Wadzinski said. ![]()
